As the Sexual Diversity World Day approaches, the Citizen Council highlights its support through the Safe Diversity Line 55 5533 5533. Home should not be a place of exclusion.
Family rejection and fear to show one’s sexual orientation are two of the main topics the team of psychologists of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City work with in relation with the LGBTTI+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Travesty, Intersexual, Queer and Asexual) who call the Safe Diversity Line 55 5533 5533.
This is why within the framework of the Sexual Diversity World Day, held on June 25th, the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City called upon families to strengthen values of tolerance, respect and communication with people who belong to this community.
“We are convinced that home should be a place where situations of discrimination are prevented and not a place of exclusion, so it’s necessary to promote respect, tolerance, communication and family inclusion under the premise that one’s sexual orientation does not define a person,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, president of the Citizen Council, expressed.
Out of the total number of calls that the Safe Diversity Line received, 41 percent were seeking psychological supports. The main reasons were fear of expressing one’s sexual orientation and fear of family rejection.
People pointed out that they’ve been victims of mocking, beatings, threats, insults and that they have been denied the chance to stay home.
“Just as we have worked jointly to eradicate family violence, it is time to eradicate family homophobia and respect each of its members’ sexual orientation,” Guerrero Chipres added.
The Line also helped people confront problems with their partners, depression, sex transitions, HIV detection, among others.
Legally, they offered counseling in terms of work discrimination, aggression and threats due to sexual orientation. They also offer help in terms of harassment of crimes such as fraud and extortion.
May has been the month with the greatest number of interactions in 2020, with 33 percent of the total number of calls. We’ve helped people from 14 states of the Mexican Republic including the State of Mexico, Jalisco, Chihuahua, Aguascalientes, Baja California, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Queretaro and Mexico City.
