10 mayoralties register a reduction of criminal incidents of over 40%

Mexico City shows, altogether, a decrease of 47% of high impact criminal incidents during the first six-month period of 2021 and there’s an improvement in terms of safety perception.

Ten mayoralties in Mexico City registered decreases of over 40% in high impact criminal incidents during the first six-month period of this year, compared with 2019, according to the SayYes monthly report made by the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City.

According to the analysis, base don statistics from the Executive Secretary of the Public Safety National System, data from the FGJ and those coming from 23 thousand average calls received every month at the Citizen Council, the mayoralties of Cuauhtémoc and Iztacalco had a 59% reduction, each in the 14 crimes, and Benito Juárez had a 58% reduction while Miguel Hidalgo had a decrease of 51%.

Gustavo A. Madero, Venustiano Carranza, Iztapalapa, Azcapotzalco, Cuajimalpa and Álvaro Obregón had a decrease of 49 to 41%.

Jointly, during the same period, Mexico City registered a decrease of 47%  in high impact crimes, a fact that lists it as fourth nationwide, under Yucatán, Tabasco and Chiapas. Among the six most populated entities in the country, the State of Mexico had the highest rate per 100 thousand inhabitants, with 565 crimes, followed by Jalisco with 398 crimes, Mexico City with 365, Puebla with 280, Veracruz with 226 and Guanajuato with 232.

“This downward behavior in high impact crimes also reflects an improvement in the perception of safety, two indicators that hardly show similar rends; the result of the coordinated work between authorities and the citizens’ disposition to denounce is evident,” said Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, president of the Citizen Council.

He added that, according to the National Poll of Urban Public Safety (ENSU) July 2020 by INEGI, Mexico City register an average improvement of 2.7 percentile points.

The study made by INEGI shows an improvement of 24% in the perception of safety that the population has in Milpa Alta, 13% in Cuauhtémoc and Gustavo A. Madero, 9% in Álvaro Obregón and 8% in Benito Juárez. The Denunciation, Intelligence, Safety, Innovation (SayYes) report reveals a decrease of 28% in the historic average of the first semesters of 2015 to 2021.

The crime average of these 7 years is 22 thousand 717, while in 2021 they added 16 thousand 283.
