We triple our attentions to seniors

Cases related with mistreatment represent 25% of reports received at the Silver Line 55 5533 5533, according to the “Senior Citizens Report: Mental Health and Community Support During the Pandemic.”

Requests for support for older people tripled during the first seven months of the year, adding 3,234 reports, compared with the same period of 2020, according to data received by the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City.

The main problem reported at the Silver Line 55 5533 5533, which is not related with requests for information, is mistreatment, with 25% of the cases, followed by abandonment with 4% and problems within the family with 3.5%

Within the framework of Grandparent’s Day and the celebration of senior citizens, the organism revealed that this year they also received calls asking for information about the vaccination against COVID-19 processes, representing 49% of the interactions. Statistics also reveal that interactions related with this part of the population have seemed to remain stable throughout the year.

In June 2021, for example, there were 238 cases, and in the same month of the previous year there were 239. “As people’s life expectancy  increases, we must create support networks for older people with the purpose of them enjoying not only living longer but having a dignified, healthy and happy life in a violence-free environment,” says Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, president of the Citizen Council.

As far as types of violence that were reported, there was an increase of 38% of the combination of physical, emotional and home-related violence and 56% in home-related and emotional violence. Data reveals that sons and daughters are, in 52.6% of the cases, those responsible for committing the aggressions; while in 12.3% it was the family members or spouses with 7.6%.

In total, Mexico City tops the list of number of reports; however, the agreement signed with the National DIF this year extended the chance to offer attentions to 31 states, unlike the 13 states who were able to denounce in 2020. By broadening their reach and within the context of the Healthy Aging Decade, the organism seeks to raise awareness in the Mexican population so that older people may live free from discrimination, stigma, abuse and aggressions.

The Citizen Council has the Silver Line and Trustworthy Chat 55 5533 5533 where they offer free psychological and legal aid, 24/7 all across the country. Also, they have the “Adelita Sindelito” Facebook Messenger chatbot where people can share videos, photos or their testimonies.
