More people choose to say yes to life during the first 8 months of 2021

Reports made at the Citizen Council in relation with suicidal thoughts increased by 120%during the first eight months of 2021 in comparison with the same term in 2020; we urge people to detect alerts.

According to data from the SayYes program of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City, this year, a greater number or people, mainly women, young people and underage children, have sought emotional support to overcome episodes of suicidal thoughts.

According to the organism, in the period from January to August 2021 there was a 120% increase, in comparison during the same period in 2020, in the number of requests for psychological support to prevent suicide.

Within the context of the World Suicide Prevention Day, commemorated on September 10th, the Citizen Council identified people under 30 as the age group that’s more interested in receiving support, with 84.4% of the total number of interactions.

“In all the reported cases there’s a chance and even an ample gap to prevent and avoid a suicidal conduct. When we detect deep changes in the behavior or frequent expressions regarding a lack of interest in living, it’s time to intervene, talk, help that persona and seek specialized help,” said Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, President of the Citizen Council.

Since January 2020 and until August of the present year the organism offered emotional support by phone or via chat to 9 thousand 862 people who looked for a way to say yes to life. This year, 71% of requests for psychological support came from women and 62% of the interactions were registered through WhatsApp.

The organism’s report points out that in 2021 the main reasons why people asked for help to overcome suicidal thoughts were problems within the family, which increased by 45% in relation with the first eight months in 2020.

Las year, hopelessness was the reason why more people sought help, and this year there were 26% less cases in that sense.

“The increase in the number of reports reveals that there is an increasing interest in mental health. As part of a family and as a community we must stay alert before the needs and manifestations of those around us, not minimize signs of alert or normalize changes in conduct,” Guerrero Chiprés added.

Appart from attentions given by phone or via WhatsApp, the Citizen Council offered in-person and virtual therapies of up to 12 sessions to 127 men and women at the Emotional Recovery Center to help them face suicidal thoughts.

The organism offers free professional psychological aid through the Safety Line and Trustworthy Chat 55 5533 5533 that is available 24/7 throughout the country and abroad.
