We tripled our psychological and legal attention to the LGBTTTIQA+ community

We helped 320% more people this year in comparison with 2020, over half of the cases come from the states in the Republic

Attentions related with the LGBTTTIQ+ increased by 320% during the period of January-September of this year, in comparison with the same months of 2020, according to the Safe Diversity Report 2021 of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City.

Within the framework of World Coming Out Day, this Monday, the organism informed that in the first nine months of this year it helped 722 lesbians, gays, bisexuals, travesty, transgender, transsexual, intersexual or queer people in contrast with the 172 it helped in 2020.

Among the report’s findings, it’s important that the support offered by the Safe Diversity National Line (800 000 5428) is the only of the Citizen Council’s line where calls coming from the states of the Republic are more, in sum, than the ones coming from Mexico City.

Data reveals that 40% of the cases come from Mexico City and 52% come from other entities, among which Jalisco hast 13%, the State of Mexico 12%, Guanajuato 10%, Veracruz 9% and Nuevo León and Puebla 7% each.

“Unlike other services the Citizen Council offers, in the case of the Safe Diversity Line, the percentage of attentions is higher in the states of the Republic, in sum, compared with the ones registered in Mexico City. This shows a greater need to offer support and counseling in the country’s entities,” Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, president of the Citizen Council said.

The Safe Diversity Report 2021 establishes that the five main situations that were reported were rejection, with 12%; aggressions from family members, 7.5%; violence or hitting, 7% and with 6% each: break ups and guidance to come out of the closet.

“Promoting healthy masculinities, tolerance, appreciation for diversity and a culture of denunciation will help protect the safety and integrity of people in relation with their sexual orientation,” added Guerrero Chiprés.

Before the need to offer attention to this group, the Citizen Council created on October 2020 the Safe Diversity National Line 800 000 5428 (LGBT), in order to offer free legal counseling and emotional contention, 24/7 all around the country.

Around 90%of the interactions received correspond to LGBTTTIQ+ people, but 5% were made by family members and the rest by friends, relatives, school mates, work peers or neighbors.
