DOWNWARD TREND ON 19 HIGH IMPACT CRIMES IN MEXICO CITY
  • Subway theft robbery and passerby theft and kidnapping are the crimes with the greatest downward trends from December 2018 to December 2019.

Nineteen high impact crimes showed a downward trend during December, according to the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City.

Through its monthly report on crime incidence DI SI (Denunciation, Intelligence, Safety and Innovation) they compared rates from December 2018 to December 2019, and the Council reported that the crimes with the greatest downward trends were:

  • Subway passenger robberies with a 60 percent reduction.
  • Passerby thefts, with a reduction of 51 percent.
  • Kidnapping with a reduction of 47 percent.

Meanwhile, robberies against account holders increased by 16 percent comparing the period of December 2018 and the same month in 2019.

“So that the positive trend consolidates and may be registered in longer periods and is reflected on the citizens’ perception, we must work every day through strategy, prevention and denunciation,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, president of the Council declared.

The Say Yes of the Citizen Council also establishes that injuries by firearm reduced by 45 percent, business robberies with violence decreased by 41 percent, public transport robberies by 39 percent, and bus robberies diminished by 38 percent, comparing December 2018 and December 2019.

Other crimes that also showed a downward trend were vehicle robberies with violence with -36 percent, transport driver robberies -32%, vehicle robberies without violence -30 percent.

Meanwhile homicide decreased by 29 percent, taxi passenger robberies 17 percent, house robberies 16 percent, rape 15 percent and extortion 14 percent.

House robberies decreased by 10 percent, metrobus passenger robberies 9 percent, automobile passenger/driver robberies 8 percent, and the same goes for delivery men robberies.

Regarding feminicides, on December 2019 they opened seven files while in 2018 there were three.

Guerrero Chipres reminded that the Citizen Council analyzes data from four sources, the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Safety System (SESNSP), the General Attorney’s Office in Mexico City, the Public Innovation Digital Agency and phone calls received through the Safety Line.
