WITH UIF WE INTRODUCE OUR CHAT AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

We created a new tool to report situations related with this crime, with discretion, anonymously, quickly and with the same number used by the NLAHT.

In order to enable denouncing a crime that frequently requires the witnesses’ anonymity, the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City and the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit presented the Chat against Human Trafficking.

The chat will work through WhatsApp with the same number (800 5533 000) that’s used by the National Line Against Human Trafficking (LNCTP) operated by the same organism in the capital city.

“With the same commitment and strength offered by the Citizen Council’s attention services we will strengthen the tools needed to fight against this crime that has an international impact on the operation of its criminal networks,” Santiago Nieto Castillo, head of the UIF commented.

This new service will offer free national and international attention 24/7 through specialized counselors.

Salvador Guerrero Chipres, President of the Citizen Council, mentioned that the new Chat is a way of contact that allows people to feel safer and it guarantees their anonymity.

“It enables sending information related with Human Trafficking such as their location in real time, photographs or videos that may contribute to the investigation and prosecution of these cases,” he declared.

Since 2003, the Citizen Council operates the LNCTP in which he receives reports of direct and indirect victims and witnesses, allowing to learn about the way in which traffickers operate and share this information with authorities such as the UIF.

This federal office maintains a binational collaboration with authorities from the United States, the main destination of trafficking victims, and it has established the importance of prevention and fight against the use of illicit resources in these cases before the American States Organization (OEA).

In the fight against money laundering that comes from trafficking, since 2018 the UIF has blocked a total amount of 311.3 million pesos, 77 thousand dollars and 600 euros.

During 2020, the LNCTP of the Citizen Council received 2,117 reports, out of which 60% came from the Mexican Republic’s states, 27% from Mexico City, 13% from the State of Mexico and 12% from abroad.

Last year, the organism contributed with opening 8% of the investigation files related with Human Trafficking nationwide.
