In order to establish joint strategies and actions, as well as strengthen institutional capacities for responding to citizens, the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination in Mexico City (COPRED) and the Citizen Council for Security and Justice of the City of Mexico signed a collaboration agreement to promote reporting as a fundamental tool in the fight against discrimination.
Through this agreement, both councils will work in coordination to establish actions of accompaniment, awareness, communication, linkage, coordination, professionalization and training in matters of equality and non-discrimination, as well as to promote the civic culture of reporting, which contributes to safety. and the promotion of justice.
During the event, the President of COPRED, Geraldina González de la Vega Hernández, stressed the importance of this alliance, which strengthens the work of both institutions in the sphere of competence of each, and improves the processes of care, guidance, accompaniment and channeling of complaints from people who live and transit through Mexico City.
"This act is an example of synergies and complementarity between the capital's government and society to achieve common goals.
The agreement will allow a greater rapprochement between the instances, for the benefit of priority attention groups, to provide and bring closer the means of response for complaints regarding the violation of rights, "added González de la Vega Hernández.
Meanwhile, the President of the Citizen Council, Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, stressed that the agreement represents a great opportunity to safeguard human rights:
“We must understand the historical moment in which we all find ourselves, the situation we are living in, and act to reaffirm our commitment to eliminate all kinds of violence and discrimination. "
Guerrero Chiprés detailed that of the complaints of discrimination dealt with by the Citizen Council in the Security Line (55 5533 5533), the labor sphere occupies the first place with 25%; followed by discrimination based on orientation and / or sexual preference with 11%; physical appearance, also with 11%; disability with 10%; gender 7%; maternity 4%, and 2% by religion.
Meanwhile, during 2019 the COPRED legal team treated 1,947 people for alleged acts of discrimination.
In 315 cases, pertinent elements were found to initiate a complaint or claim file. Of the complaints filed, the main causes correspond in 21.59% to pregnancy, 17.75% to health conditions, 9.46% to disability, 8.87% to gender and 6.50% to the way of acting.
Out of the total amount of attention provided by the Council's lawyers, 81 channeling was made to other competent entities, 287 steps were taken to deal with the problems raised, 289 complaints, 26 claims and 1,264 orientations.
So far in 2020, 290 services have been provided, of which 183 correspond to guidelines, 43 to management to address the problem, 8 channels, 46 complaints and 10 claims. During the signing of the agreement, the Coordinator of Attention and Education of COPRED, Alfonso García Castillo, and the Legal Director of the Citizen Council for Security and Justice of Mexico City, Graciano Cruz Soriano were also present.
Through these actions, the commitment of the Government of Mexico City is reaffirmed to promote equal treatment, as well as to prevent and eliminate all acts of discrimination that violate the human rights of citizens.
