On World Internet Day our President Salvador Guerrero Chipres calls upon people to promote prevention against sextortion and fraud during commercial transactions.
The Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City attended over 3 thousand reports for cybercrimes all around the country between 2020 and early 2021, through its Safety Line and Trustworthy Chat.
Withing the framework of World Internet Day, the President of the organism, Salvador Guerrero Chipres called upon users to take measures to prevent being victims of illicit situations through social networks or websites.
According to data from the Citizen Council, during this period they have reported 1,647 cases of sextortion, 981 cases of commercial fraud, 276 phishing cases, 193 cyber bullying cases and 105 cases of identity theft.
“Online crimes can be prevented if we stay alert as users, if we avoid being too trustful when we use the web or when we share information through social networks and we corroborate the information when we receive supposed threats from financial institutions,” Guerrero Chipres commented.
In cases of sextortion, the cybercrime that is most frequently reported at the Citizen Council, the most common demands include electronic money or cash and intimate images, although 83% of the cases were not concluded.
The organism recommends avoiding taking pictures and sharing photos or videos with a sexual content and in case of being a victim of blackmail related with this topic, people should not give in to demands, they should talk to their families and denounce.
Data from the Citizen Council reveal that frauds in commercial transactions through the internet are reported by men in 59% of the cases and 54% of these cases are consummated.
The main types of transactions involved in this type of crime happen when purchasing electronics and vehicles.
“Criminals profit from people’s needs and from supposedly filling a need of a good or service at a low cost; the main recommendations include not trusting great offers, and checking the seller’s reputation,” Guerrero Chipres expressed.
According to information from the citizen organism, reports for phishing in early 2021 add up 152 cases. Last year 124 cases were registered.
In this type of cybercrime criminals seek to get the victim’s personal bank information through supposed purchases in websites that they must verify or through emails that supposedly come from banks.
The Citizen Council offers free legal and psychological aid 24/7 throughout the country through the Safety Line and Trustworthy Chat 55 5533 5533.
