WE OPEN A MODULE AT THE CENTRAL DE ABASTO IN IZTAPALAPA

Together with the Mexico City Government and the UNCOFYL support, they launch a joint campaign called “Preventing and denouncing is our central goal”.

With the purpose of reinforcing safety and preventing crime at the Central de Abasto (CEDA), the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City (CCSJ), in coordination with the authorities from CEDA and the Mexico City Government, announced diverse actions meant to protect consumers, merchants, businessmen and transporters through the establishment of a citizen attention module.

For the first time in the history of the Central de Abasto and the Citizen Council, a team of lawyers and psychologists is offering free services to the community of the CEDA, from 22:00 to 17:00 of the following day, Mondays thru Sundays. The office is located on Aisle 3, Shop 150 of the Fruits and Legumes section.

During the inauguration, Marcela Villegas, coordinator and General Manager of the Central de Abasto, referred to the Module as a “fundamental element to complement the strategies of crime prevention and opportune responses. Having this support is, without doubt, an invitation for people to denounce.”

The Citizen Council module that opened on Wednesday November 18th thanks to the donation of a space made by the UNCOFYL, offers legal and psychological support from the heart of the biggest wholesales market in Latin America. The strategy is complemented by a series of dissemination campaigns, “Preventing and denouncing is our central goal”, which is the base to promote safe and anonymous denunciations.

“Together with the authorities and the citizens, we are an element of change that works in a coordinated way in order to have a Safe Central de Abasto where merchants, transporters, visitors and all those who work at this great City that the Central is, have the possibility to denounce anonymously and get help before any crime,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, President of the Citizen Council, declared.

Pablo Vazquez Camacho, Assistant Secretary of Citizen Participation and Crime Prevention of the SSC; Francisco Javier Gallegos Garcia, District Attorney of Territorial Investigation in Iztapalapa; and Pedro Torres Madariaga, President of the UNCOFYL, were also present at the inauguration.

“Highlighting the importance the policy of the Citizen Council of meeting people and not only serving as a link between certain groups and authorities dedicated to safety has had during the past few years is relevant because they truly seek to reach out to all the groups and, in that way, strengthen their relationships with organizations dedicated to safety and justice,” Assistant Secretary Pablo Vazquez Camacho said.

Each day, more than 500 thousand people visit the 327 hectares covered by the CEDA, so it is important to have a Safe Central, a key concept of the communication campaign “Preventing and enouncing is our central goal”, implemented jointly in order to bring together all the local population.

“One of the greatest challenges the Central de Abasto faces is being a safe place, that’s why we are working together with participants, the technical committee and the unions in order to make it safe,” Pedro Torres Madariaga, President of the UNCOFYL declared.

“We must know what to do in case of being victims of a crime. The program the Citizen Council is developing in coordination with the District Attorney’s Office and the SSC is a support program for citizens with a focus on denunciation,” the District Attorney of Territorial Investigation in Iztapalapa, Francisco Javier Gallegos Garcia assured.

Psychological therapies and legal counseling services at the CEDA will add to the integral strategy the Citizen Council offers through the three attention modules located at the Tapo, South and North bus terminals, apart from the citizen attention seat that was inaugurated earlier this year at Luis Hidalgo Monroy 100 in Iztapalapa and that offers free services that contribute with crime prevention in the eastern territory of Mexico City.

The Citizen Council reminds everyone: warehousemen, transporters, sellers or buyers to make their reports or ask for council through the Safety Line or Trustworthy Chat 55 5533 5533.
