We call upon people to praise the new patriotic heroes who work in favor of a culture of equity and we signed the agreement with “demachosahombres” to promote new masculinities.
National holidays are a chance to break with the macho archetype that has characterized Mexican men’s identity throughout history and that is manifested through the use of violence before conflicts, rejecting asking for help or showing vulnerability or feelings, and following gender roles.
This is what Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, President of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City commented and then he called upon citizens to celebrate the Independence with pluralism, inclusion and tolerance.
“Many Mexican men work to vindicate the idea of gender by adopting a more open, peaceful, receptive personality, and to promote positive masculinities that are not sexist or homophobic,” said Guerrero Chiprés. In order to promote the eradication of machista attitudes and disseminating new masculinities, the Citizen Council signed an agreement with the Institute for the Development of Anti-Hegemonic Masculinities (IDMAH), also known as “demachosahombres”.
Both organisms agreed to promote activities that strengthen a culture of equality and break with the archetype of macho man, apart from offering training courses, dissemination activities and psychological attention for men who want to stop being violent.
Nicko Nogués, founder of IDMAH, commented that the bond with the Council helps promote changes that all the society must make. “We are strongly interested in generating new interaction dynamics in which men become involved and fight to help, collaborate and promote inclusion,” he said.
Guerrero Chiprés highlighted that it’s impossible to stop the advance in the understanding of identities because new masculinities are committed with substantial equality, inclusion and diversity.
The Citizen Council called upon men and women to become the new patriotic heroes who help raise awareness about machista attitudes and to denounce homophobic actions or violence within the family. The organism offers free psychological support and legal aid, 24/7 all around the country, through the Women and Family Line and the Trustworthy Chat, as well as the National Diversity Line 800 000 5428.
