We launch the phone number 800 000 5428 offering psychological and legal support. Around 64% of people who are part of the LGBTTTI+ community helped by the Council are from these 22 states.
About 63.4 percent of people from the LGBTTTI+ community who seek counseling have had suicidal thoughts or attempts. One out of three suffers from family rejection because of their sexual orientation, so the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City opens the first National Line for Safe Diversity.
During a press conference, the President of the Citizen Council, Salvador Guerrero Chipres, introduced the phone number 800 000 5428, in which they will offer psychological aid, suicide prevention, long distance therapies, and legal counseling 24/7 in cases of discrimination or legal transactions.
“This call line will help promote, respect, protect and guarantee the LGBTTTI+ community’s rights,” Guerrero Chipres mentioned within the framework of the World Coming Out Day.
Guerrero Chipres informed that they decided to open the line because 64 percent of the phone calls the Council receives in its strategy of support to the community come from 22 states of the Republic, more than half (53.1%) are 12 to 25 years of age, 70 percent are men.
Around 45.6 percent sought psychological support and out of these, one out of three did it due to family rejection, one out of four due to problems related with their sexual orientation and two out of five due to problems with their partners.
Out of these people, 33.3 percent manifested having suffered from family rejection due to their sexual orientation.
“Parents are the ones who discriminate the most against gender identity or who react more negatively before the explicit expression or declaration of their children’s sexual orientation,” the President of the Citizen Council insisted.
He pointed out that the Principles of Yogyakarta (about the application of the international law of human rights in relation with sexual orientation and gender identity) are the basis of the National Line for Safe Diversity’s operation.
“A society that is going through a true transformation does not avoid; it communicates, coexists and protects the rights and identities associated to that unbearable, dangerous and risky truth of sexuality, as Michael Foucault called it; I think it is very important to find ourselves in this global evolution that we must have in our continent,” Guerrero Chiprés added.
