TRIPLED OUR EMOTIONAL SERVICES AFTER ONE YEAR OF THE PANDEMIC

We have helped 35 thousand 025 people since 2020 and throughout the first two months of this year and we have helped in 5 thousand 542 cases of suicidal thoughts or attempts.

One year after the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the country, psychological attentions that the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City has offered have tripled.

Near the end of February 2021, phone calls made to the Safety Line and Trustworthy Chat added 6,989 while during the same period of 2020 they added 1,768. This represents an increase of 295%.

“This is a reality that, globally, means that the pandemic has had an impact in mental health and that it made evident the need to offer psychological attention to wide sectors of the population,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, President of the Citizen Council, mentioned.

When presenting the report “Emotions and safety one year after the pandemic,” he commented that since 2020 and during the first months of 2021 they have added 35,025 reports of free psychological attention through 55 5533 5533, which is attended 24/7 by 110 psychologists from the organism.

The main reasons why people have asked for help are relationship problems with 12.6%, anxiety with 9.7%, family problems with 8.9%, depression with 7.9% and pandemic fatigue with 7.7%.

“Practically, one out of every five people who have called us are underage and 31 percent are between 18 and 30 years of age, which reflects the alliances we have with social networks such as Facebook and TikTok that allow us to offer our service in its tool box for mental health,” Guerrero Chipres pointed out.

During this year of the pandemic, the Citizen Council has helped 5,542 people who manifested having suicidal intentions.

These cases also tripled during the first two-month period of this year, adding 1,027, in comparison with the 304 received during the same period in 2020.

About 32% of these reports come from underage children and 42% are between 18 and 30 years of age.

“Before committing suicide there are three stages, idealization, planning and suicidal intention, and there are over 30 causes for it, the most common of which include grief, loss, a work situation or something that someone believes there’s no possibility of stopping.

“Our country is not suicidal although the whole topic of suicide reappeared throughout the world due to the pandemic,” Guerrero Chipres highlighted.

The Citizen Council offers free legal and psychological support services 24/7 through the Safety Line or Trustworthy Chat, both at 55 5533 5533.
