During the first semester of 2020 we received 87 calls while this year there have been 430. The Council launches the Safe Diversity National Chat 800 000 5428, in a free and immediate way.

The Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City informed that during the first six months of 2021 there have been 394% more reports from the LGBTTTQI+ community, compared with the same period in 2020.

Data from the organism reveal that during the first six months of this year they registered 430 attentions, compared with 87 that were reported last year. The Safe Diversity National Line 800 000 5428 was introduced on October 2020 to offer a service of psychological and legal aid before any type of discrimination due to sexual identity or gender.

“Enabling denunciation is a must against the vulnerabilities that the LBTTTQI+ population face; this increasing number took place because we offered a free service through our Line,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, President of the Council, declared.

The Council has received reports from 23 states in the Republic and four countries in Latin America, so now it broadens its services through the National Chat for Safe Diversity, which will work 24/7 with the same number as the Line, 800 000 5428.

“Thanks to the experience we’ve had with the Trustworthy Chat 55 5533 5533 that we opened two years ago and the National Chat vs Human Trafficking 800 5533 000, introduced three months ago, we’ve noticed that the closeness, anonymity and discretion that WhatsApp offers invites people to feel more open to asking for help,” Guerrero Chipres added.

He pointed out that 33% of the people who asked for help are underage and 39% are between 18 and 30 years. About 39% of reports come from Mexico City and 12% from the State of Mexico.

Nearly 46% of people who called said to be gay, 17% lesbian, 11% bisexual, 10% transgender and 6% transsexual.

Among the situations the community reported, most of them denounced reject due to their sexual preference, violence or physical abuse, they asked for counseling for their family, partner or friends and they reported aggressions from their family.

Data shows that nearly half of the cases of reject come from parents and a similar number from other family members.

Other situations that they reported were doubts about their sexual orientation, the correct way to come out, aggressions or lack of support from their families.

The organism establishes alliances with diverse organisms and institutions to channel cases and exchange information. Among them, there’s the Council to Prevent and Eradicate Discrimination in Mexico City (COPRED), The Inter-Institutional Network of Attention for a Safe Diversity and Marea Diversa.
