There was also a reduction in 12 of the 14 high impact crimes during the first four months of 2021 and Mexico City was one of the entities with the greatest reduction

During the first quarter of 2021 criminal incidents in Mexico City decreased by 28% in comparison with the same period throughout the past seven years, according to the SayYes report of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City.

Between 2015 and 2021 they registered an average of 15 thousand 315 high impact crimes during the first quarters, while this year, during the same period, they added 10 thousand 999 crimes.

“Safety is a citizen right that is reinforced through collective participation, the promotion of a culture of prevention and denunciation. The decrease in the number of crimes reflects results in the safety strategy established by authorities and an advance in terms of civic culture,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, President of the Citizen Council, commented.

Since 2015, the Executive Secretary of the National System of Public Safety presented a different way of measuring criminal incidents based on high impact crimes, allowing us to have evidence of a decrease in 12 out of the 14 crimes in Mexico City during the first quarter of 2021, in comparison with the same period in 2020.

Kidnappings decreased by 70%, changing from 27 cases in 2020 to 8 in 2021; car theft with violence decreased by 34%, changing from 1,243 to 818 cases, according to the SayYes report elaborated with data from the SESNSP, the General Attorney’s Office and over 23 thousand phone calls received by the Citizen Council each month, in average, through the Safety Line.

Business robberies with violence and car theft without violence, homicide, robberies in public transportation and house robberies without violence showed reductions ranging from 23 to 28 percent.

Malicious injuries by firearm, extorsion, feminicide, house robberies without violence, and passersby robberies in public streets showed reductions between 19 and 6 percent.

The only two crimes that increased were rape and robberies to transport drivers with 8 and 11 percent, respectively.

Nationwide, Mexico City was among the 10 entities with a greater reduction of criminal incidents during the first quarter of 2021 in comparison with the same period in 2020, with 19%.
