We open the Safety Line and Trustworthy Chat 55 5533 5533 to the social campaign of the Vencer el P@sado (Beat the P@st) soap opera; between June and July there were 50% more reports of sextorsion.
The Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City and Televisa presented a social campaign through the novel Vencer el P@asado, a soap opera that deals, among other topics, with manifestations of digital violence such as sextortion and cyber bullying.
Girls, teenagers and women are going through a process of empowerment that allows them to face and overcome all the machista forms of violence. Proof of this is an increase in the number of reports of cyber crimes such as sextortion, Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, president of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City stated.
“Citizens and particularly women can beat the violence of the past and overcome shame, fear or a sense of guilt so that they denounce the aggressions they were or are victims of,” he sated in a joint conference with the television network.
At the end of each chapter they show the Safety Line and Trustworthy Chat, 55 5533 5533, that offers attention 24/7 for free and it aids victims of this crime with confidentiality. “We offered the community the free Citizen Council’s call line so that the audience that watches the show can ask for help.
“Therefore, Vencer el P@asado is not only successful because of its audience but because it goes beyond entertainment,” Alicia Lebrija, executive president of Fundación Televisa explained.
“When we hear that our audience becomes aware of this problem we know that we are meeting our goal,” Rosy Ocampo, the show’s producer mentioned.
According to data from the Citizen Council, between June and July of this year there were 50% more reports of sextortion, going from 80 to 120, at the Safety Line and the Trustworthy Chat.
In sum, so far this year there have been 620 reports for this cyber crime, out of which 60% were only attempts. Guerrero Chiprés highlighted the advances in reports of acts of gender based violence that alert about this situation that occurs all around the world and that worsened due to the pandemic.
So far this year the Citizen Council has received 3 thousand 279 reports for violence within the family, 97% of them from women and 83% registered within the home, half of which were caused by the spouse or partner.
At the conference, actors Angelique Boyer, Erika Buenfil, África Zavala dn Sebastián Rully were also present, together with Reyna Monjaraz, director of Fundación en Movimiento, and Leonor Calderón, representative in Mexico of the United Nations’ Population Fund
