The Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City stated that controlling Chelerias (beer selling venues) is fundamental in the recovery of safety since it is linked with the reduction of at least five important problems: fights, civic faults, street harassment, auto parts theft and drug dealing.

In the Responsible Alcohol Consumption International Day the president of the citizen Council, Salvador Guerrero Chipres, acknowledged that by controlling this type of establishments is a task in which authorities, citizens and businessmen must participate.

“In this topic that we are all responsible for we need people to denounce illegal alcohol sales or sales to underage children, that authorities continue to carry out verification programs and that businessmen or entrepreneurs stop establishing illegal businesses,” he pointed out.

He informed that since January the Safety Call Line (55) 5533-5533 has received 217 reports about Chelerias. They report at least two problems related with alcohol consumption.

In 48 percent of these cases they reported civic faults such as urinating in public places, placing items that obstruct free circulation and excessive noise.

In 24 percent of the cases they reported fights, and in at least 11.2 percent of these fights they used a firearm.

Events linked with the sale and consumption of drugs or adulterated alcohol represent 23 percent.

In a lesser way, they reported sexual harassment (1.6 percent) auto parts theft and robberies against passersby (1.2 percent).

The municipality of Iztapalapa adds more reports with 21.83 percent, followed by Cuauhtemoc with 11.3 percent of the reports and Gustavo A Madero with 19.78 percent.

According to the information offered for users, 35.43 percent of chelerias are located in establishments, 29.66 percent on the streets and 27.56 percent in private homes.

Salvador Guerrero Chipres said that citizen denunciation is a fundamental part of the actions carried out by the government in order to end this type of business.

Also, he reminded that on September 11th the Citizen Council signed an alliance for responsible consumption with Grupo Modelo based on three fundamental axis: not serving alcohol to underage children, not DUI, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption.

As part of this alliance the Citizen Council will teach workshops about the prevention of addictions and it will publish informative material through different platforms promoting a shared responsibility and a moderate alcohol consumption among young people.
