According to our DiSi (SayYes) report, there was also a reduction of 8 percentual points in the participation of criminal incidents in Mexico City.
According to the DiSi report of the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City High impact criminal incidents decreased by 31% last year at the Iztapalapa mayoralty, in comparison with 2019.
Mayor Clara Brugada Molina highlighted that this reduction is related with the work made by the Safety Cabinet of the area, territorial meetings, detection of insecurity, programs such as Always Alive, Life Quality and Safe and Free Roads.
“A reduction of crime incidents in Iztapalapa has an important impact on Mexico City and in the rest of the country,” said Brugada at the report’s virtual presentation.
The president of the Citizen Council, Salvador Guerrero Chipres, pointed out that the mayoralty also registered a percentual reduction in the participation this has in criminal incidents in the capital city.
Even though it represented 24% in the last 12 years, last year it was reduced to 16% while the rate for every 100 thousand inhabitants, it is listed in tenth place in Mexico City.
“The reduction of criminal incidents is the result of a joint effort of institutional coordination, the promotion of citizen denunciations and public policies that were implemented by mayor Clara Brugada,” Guerrero Chipres commented.
Out of the 14 high impact crimes analyzed by the DiSi report in Iztapalapa, seven presented a reduction of over 31 percent, including extortion (-49), kidnapping (-44), passerby robberies in public areas (-42), injuries by firearms (-40), house robberies without violence (-37), transporter robberies (-37) and public transport robberies (-34).
Since January 2020, the Citizen Council has had a seat at the mayoralty, at the San Pablo neighborhood, where until January 26th of this year they offered 1,874 legal or psychological aids, which enabled opening 244 investigation files out of which over 30% were due to violence within the family.
Always Alive works on 10 priority neighborhoods in which 230 counselors visit every household to raise awareness about the importance of denouncing violence within the family and gender-based violence, and to offer the services of the General Attorney’s Office, the Women’s Ministry, the mayoralty, the Human Rights Commission and the Citizen Council.
“The purpose is to raise awareness within the family, from grandmothers to sons, in order to promote a life free of violence against women,” Brugada Molina mentioned.
The DiSi report of Iztapalapa states that last year, in comparison with 2019, cases of sexual abuse decreased by 27%, sexual harassment 12% and violence within the family 2%.
The mayor and the president of the Citizen Council discarded that confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic is a factor that influences on the reduction of criminal incidents because other cities or entities did not present any reduction.
