EXTORTION IN MEXICO CITY DECREASES BY 76 PERCENT

Criminal incidents in the country’s capital show a reduction of 55 percent on September 2020 in comparison with January 2019. Read the monthly report SayYes.

In Mexico City there was a decrease of 55 percent in high impact criminal incidents during September 2020 in comparison with January 2019, a fact that makes it the second entity with the highest index of safety recovery nationwide. The aforementioned according to information the Citizen Council for Safety and Justice in Mexico City shared in its monthly report SayYes (Denounce, Intelligence, Safety and Innovation) in October and that you can find here.

Crimes that showed the best behaviors during the periods that were analyzed were: kidnapping, extortion and business theft with violence. The first diminished by 94 percent in comparison with January 2019.

Extortion decreased by 76 percent, locating the capital city among the three first entities with the most significant improvements in this crime, according to data from the National Survey of Victimization and Perception about Public Safety (ENVIPE) 2019, showing that 92 percent of extortions are made by cell phone.

Business robberies with violence decreased by 69 percent.

“Data shows us that the targeted work made by the Safety Ministry and the District Attorney’s office, added to a culture of citizen prevention offers positive results. These trends are good news,” Salvador Guerrero Chipres, President of the Citizen Council expressed.

The SayYes that was published in October also highlights a decrease in 14 high impact crimes along the 16 mayoralties. Benito Juarez showed the best trend with a decrease of 76 percent of incidents followed by Iztacalco with 71 percent and then by Magdalene Contreras with 63 percent.

Since January 2019 the Citizen Council publishes the monthly report SayYes that analyzes information form the Executive Secretary of the National System of Public Safety, the General Attorney’s Office in Mexico City, the Digital Agency of Public Innovation and data from almost 26 thousand calls that they receive every month at the Safety Line.
